Securing both planning and building regulation approvals for a loft conversion in an area where no other firm had been successful our clients have been kind enough to leave us an in-depth review.

INITIAL CONCEPT - we had no idea where to start, we just knew we needed more space in order to grow our family and had no idea how to achieve this in a bungalow with far too low a pitched roof to go up in an area where so many people had failed to achieve planning permission to do increased pitch loft conversions.”

“PLANNING STAGE - this really was the biggest hurdle as people had tried previously with other architect’s designs to obtain planning permission in our road to convert their bungalows upwards and failed. Sean & Jimmy came up with designs that suited us perfectly but also kept the planners happy in terms of remaining in keeping with the neighbourhood, not obstructing anyone’s views, and communicated endlessly with the local council/planning authority throughout the process, tweaking the designs as per the feedback with no compromises for us until a final permission was fully granted.
DESIGN STAGE - rather than simply drawing up our ideas, they made sure to come up with designs that truly achieved our brief and in a beautiful way that made the most of our fantastic views. They were not afraid to challenge our thoughts in favour of far superior ideas that worked so much better for the space, our family requirements, and the overall look of our property. They even managed to create a space for stairs in our bungalow that resulted in no compromises to our existing rooms – in fact, the designs meant there was only one small tweak to the downstairs (moving a wall in around a foot) and everything else remained intact, despite incorporating a whole new staircase that fully adhered to building regulations in size. This was such a huge saving grace for us because it meant we had far less disruption to our living space and could continue living in the property with our one-year-old son despite the whole roof being removed and a new one put on.”

“BUILDING STAGE - they guided us fully through the tender process, recommending a suite of experienced builders/tradesmen and helped us to come to the decision to appoint Southbourne Builders, who were truly brilliant and executed Jimmy & Sean’s designs beautifully. Their support didn’t end there as they then guided us through our full build process – coming to site on numerous occasions to help us even with decisions such as where best to place the free-standing bath to make the most of the space with the rest of the bathroom suite & to take advantage of the views (sounds easy but with the plumbing decisions required and the huge shower we decided we wanted, this really did take some serious architectural input!). They helped us communicate with our builders on various issues that cropped up as a result of our property’s makeup that could have derailed the designs. However, they were always on hand to work with the builders/ourselves to come up with solutions that got everything back on track and resulted in the perfect forever home.”

“HIGHLY RECOMMEND - JB Architecture were brilliant, professional and friendly from the offset. We had no idea where to start (we wanted to do a loft conversion on our bungalow involving removing the roof as the pitch was too low) so as soon as we met them, they eased our concerns and guided us each step of the way. They listened to our ideas and created a design that met & exceeded our needs as well as giving us the best chance of obtaining planning permission, which is tough in our area. We also didn’t have to worry that the plans would have to change at building regulations stage as they made sure everything complied from the beginning. Through the building regulations stage they recommended a range of builders, structural engineer etc and helped us with the full tender process to select the right ones for us. Their drawings were very professional but also easy to understand with nice details thought of, such as providing a scaled ruler so we could start measuring for furniture etc. These guys really do go above and beyond to transform what was just an idea/pipe dream into reality with no pain along the way! I shall certainly be using them again if we do any other projects in the future.”

“Based on a couple of recommendations from friends, we asked JB Architecture to work on our home extension project. We’d never done anything like this before so didn’t know what to expect, but they made the process seem easy. Jimmy and Sean were both so easy to talk to and made us feel relaxed each time they came to our house. Jimmy listened to our ideas and made suggestions during his initial no obligation visit, and even took the time to involve our children and answer all their questions as well as ours. During their second visit, they photographed and took measurements to draw up an existing plan. We had an idea of what we thought was possible to include in our home, but were amazed to see what they had included when the initial design was ready. This meant we ended up with a utility room and office which we didn’t think there was space for. They took on our feedback to develop exactly what we wanted and responded quickly to our emails to discuss details. After agreeing to proceed, the detailed plan was developed and they submitted this for planning approval on our behalf, so we didn’t have to worry about how to do this. Once approved, they also provided us with recommendations for some local builders and were available during the build to discuss a couple of points with the builder.
